If you're thinking about your first Brazilian wax, it's completely normal to feel a little nervous. Most of that worry comes from not knowing what to expect. Here's a clear walk-through of how to prepare, what actually happens during the appointment, and how to take care of your skin afterward.
What is a Brazilian wax?
A Brazilian wax removes hair from the entire bikini area: the front, the sides, and in between, front to back. Some people leave a small strip or shape in front, and that's always your choice. A bikini wax, by comparison, is a cleanup of the bikini line and sides only, the hair that would show outside a swimsuit.
How to prepare
- Let your hair grow to about ΒΌ inch. That's roughly the length of a grain of rice, and it gives the wax enough to grip. If it's much longer, a quick trim with scissors is fine.
- Stop shaving at least two weeks before. Shaved hair grows back at uneven lengths, which makes waxing less effective and more uncomfortable.
- Exfoliate gently a day or two before to loosen dead skin and help prevent ingrown hairs, but skip scrubbing the day of.
- Arrive with clean, dry skin. Skip lotions, oils, and powders that day.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment so nothing rubs afterward.
- Mention any skin medications. Retinoids and some acne treatments make skin more fragile, so always tell your esthetician. Many estheticians advise waiting several months after finishing isotretinoin (Accutane) before waxing. Your esthetician or doctor can guide you.
What happens during the appointment
Your esthetician will step out while you undress from the waist down and settle onto the treatment bed under a towel or sheet. The area is cleansed, and wax is applied in small sections, then removed quickly. You'll be guided into a few different positions so every area can be reached. It's all routine for a trained esthetician, and a good one will talk you through each step so there are no surprises.
At Bare Honey, a Brazilian takes about 45 minutes, in a private room with just you and your esthetician.
Does a Brazilian wax hurt?
Honestly, the first one is the most uncomfortable. The good news is that each pull lasts only a second, and the sting fades quickly. It also gets noticeably easier over time: with regular waxing, hair tends to grow back finer and sparser, so later appointments are quicker and more comfortable.
A few things can help:
- Breathe out slowly as each strip is removed
- Try to schedule outside the days right before and during your period, when skin is often more sensitive
- Skip caffeine right before your appointment if you tend to feel jittery
Aftercare: the first 48 hours
Freshly waxed skin is sensitive, so give it a day or two to calm down:
- Avoid hot baths, hot tubs, saunas, and swimming pools
- Skip intense workouts and heavy sweating
- Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear and clothing
- Avoid tanning and direct sun on the area
- Don't apply scented lotions or products
After 48 hours, start gently exfoliating two or three times a week. That's the single best way to prevent ingrown hairs between appointments.
How often should you book?
Most people rebook every four to six weeks. Staying on a regular schedule keeps your hair on a similar growth cycle, which means smoother results and more comfortable visits.
A Brazilian at Bare Honey in Conroe is $60, and a bikini wax is $35. See all waxing services and prices, or read about hard wax vs. soft wax.
